LTFRB set to hear taxi fare hike petition
MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is set to hear today a fare hike petition by a group of taxi cab operators.
LTFRB officials are expected to act on the petition of the Philippine National Taxi Operators’ Association (PNTOA) asking for a P10 increase in the existing P30 flagdown rate for the first 500 meters of travel.
The group has requested for the fare increase due to the rising cost of fuel and vehicle maintenance.
Aside from the P10 hike in the flagdown rate, PNTOA also asked for an additional P1 to the present P2.50 rate for every succeeding 300 meters and two minutes waiting time.
Representatives of the National Council for Commuters’ Protection (NCCCP), a consumer welfare advocacy group, are also expected to attend the fare hike hearing to come up with “material evidence” that taxi operators are losing money.
The LTFRB granted a fare increase to taxis in September 2004.
