Actor Richard Gomez, who is running as congressman of the 4th district of Leyte under the Liberal Party (LP), was disqualified by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Wednesday due to lack of residency requirements.
“In an instant case, the respondent has not presented sufficient proof that would establish his ties to Ormoc City. The absence of such ties indicates his lack of intention to stay permanently in the said locality,” read the Comelec’s First Division resolution. (more…)

Oprah Winfrey is calling it quits after more than 20 years of doing her daytime talk show. According to sources, Oprah told her staff yesterday afternoon in a company meeting. Also yesterday, Tim Bennett, president of Oprah’s Harpo Productions, announced that she will leave “Oprah” in September 2011. Oprah will confirm the news on her show today. “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will not be moving to the Oprah Winfrey Network as was rumored. MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Justice (DOJ) has approved the filing of charges against actor Richard Gutierrez in connection with the death of his personal manager during a road accident in Cavite last May.
In a four-page resolution issued last Friday, prosecutors said they have found probable cause to file in court charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against Gutierrez for the death of Nomar Pardo. (more…)

SEASIDE HEIGHTS (AP) – Authorities say a 25-year-old former two-time “American Idol” contestant has been struck and killed by a car in a New Jersey shore town.
The Asbury Park Press reports that Alexis Cohen, of Allentown, Pa., was killed early Saturday in Seaside Heights.
Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office says an autopsy indicated she suffered chest, head and abdominal injuries. Mohel says investigators are seeking more information about the collision.
Cohen auditioned in Philadelphia for the popular Fox singing competition in August 2007, and the episode was aired in January 2008. She tried out again during the show’s eighth season.
A video of her angry rant after being rejected by judges went viral on the Internet. (more…)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Actress Farrah Fawcett, the “Charlie’s Angels” television star whose big smile and feathered blond mane made her one of the reigning sex symbols of the 1970s, died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. She was 62.
Fawcett, who first vaulted to stardom by an alluring poster of her in a red swimsuit, was diagnosed with anal cancer in late 2006. It spread to her liver in 2007, proving resistant to numerous medical treatments in Germany and California.
“After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away,” Fawcett’s long time companion, actor Ryan O’Neal, said in a statement.
“Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world.”
Fawcett’s death in a Los Angeles hospital came just six weeks after the TV broadcast in May of a video diary she made chronicling her battle with cancer and her final months.
Called “Farrah’s Story,” the documentary was effectively a self-penned obituary by the actress, who was bedridden and had lost her famous hair by the time it was shown.
O’Neal said she had wanted to tell her story on her own terms. Earlier this week, O’Neal said Fawcett had agreed to marry him before her death, but a marriage never took place, a spokesman for the actress and O’Neal said. (more…)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Michael Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing but whose musical genius was overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals, died on Thursday. He was 50.
Jackson was pronounced dead at about 2:26 p.m. PDT (5:26 EDT) after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest, said Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. The cause of death was not known and an autopsy would likely take place on Friday, he said.
Jackson’s sudden death had been reported earlier by U.S. media, which said he was taken ill at his home and rushed to the hospital by paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived.
Known as the “King of Pop,” for hits that included “Thriller” and “Billie Jean,” Jackson’s dramatic, one-gloved stage presence and innovative dance moves were imitated by legions of fans around the world.
He transformed music videos and his lifetime record sales tally is believed to be around 750 million, which, added to the 13 Grammy Awards he received, made him one of the most successful entertainers of all time. (more…)

LOS ANGELES – Across the country, people reacted in stunned disbelief Thursday as word spread that Michael Jackson had collapsed and died. Within minutes of Jackson’s arrival by ambulance at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center people began arriving by the hundreds, the crowd quickly filling a grassy entrance outside the hospital. Overhead, news helicopters whirred noisily and TV trucks clogged streets.
As word spread a few minutes later that Jackson had died, several people burst into tears. Others stood silently, looking pensive, as they waited for official word from the hospital. Still others whipped out cell phones and began calling or texting friends to pump them for information.
A similar scene played out just a couple miles away, in front of Jackson’s tony Holmby Hills home, where a Fire Department ambulance had arrived to take him to the hospital.
“I’m in shock,” said Becky Williams, a 26-year-old Jackson fan from Salt Lake City who happened to be visiting her sister just down the street. (more…)

One died in a car accident involving actor Richard Gutierrez, his personal assistant and his bodyguard in Cavite this morning. Gutierrez, who came from a shooting stint, bumped his sports car into a lamp post after missing a semi curve in Tagaytay City. With him are Norman Pardo, his personal assistant, and George Mustura, his bodyguard. Pardo was declared dead on arrival at the Adventist University Hospital, while Mustura sustained serious injuries and is still being treated at the Tagaytay Medical Center. Gutierrez, who was also rushed to the Tagaytay Medical Center, was transferred to the Asian Hospital in Alabang and is now in stable condition. (more…)
